George Savalas, a Greek-American actor, is most notably recognized for his co-starring role on his elder brother Telly Savalas's popular television detective series Kojak, which aired from 1973 to 1978. During his time on the show, he played the character of Detective Stavros, alongside his brother's portrayal of Kojak. Interestingly, George Savalas later changed his middle name from "Nicholas" to "Demosthenes" and was credited as simply Demosthenes in the show's end credits to avoid confusion with his brother.
George Savalas served in the Pacific during World War II, where he was a decorated U.S. Navy gunner. After the war, he pursued his passion for acting by attending Columbia University's School of Drama. Prior to his success on television, he had a notable career on the stage, both as an actor and an acting instructor. Additionally, he was briefly the drummer for the Clyde McCoy Big Band.
Before his breakthrough on Kojak, Savalas made his television debut on the Dick Powell Theater and went on to guest star on various other series. He also appeared in several films, including Genghis Khan in 1965 and Kelly's Heroes in 1970. Following the conclusion of Kojak, Savalas recorded a Top-10 Greek language record and embarked on a tour with his band, performing at renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall.
In his later years, Savalas returned to his first love, the stage, and appeared in numerous off-Broadway productions. Sadly, he passed away in 1985 at the age of 60 due to leukemia, leaving behind his wife and their six children, five sons, and one daughter.
