Frederick Dewey Smith, also known as Fred "Sonic" Smith, was an American guitarist who left an indelible mark on the music world. Born on September 14, 1949, in West Virginia, Smith's remarkable journey began with his membership in the influential rock band MC5, a group known for their energetic live performances and socially conscious lyrics.
After MC5, Smith went on to form Sonic's Rendezvous Band, releasing a single, "City Slang", during his lifetime. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in his career, showcasing his unique guitar playing style and musical vision.
Smith's life was marked by significant personal and professional relationships. He met his future wife, the renowned singer and poet Patti Smith, when his band opened a show for her. Lenny Kaye, Patti's guitarist, introduced the two before the performance, and they tied the knot in 1980.
Together, Fred and Patti collaborated on her 1988 album Dream of Life, a testament to their creative partnership and mutual respect for one another's art.
Fred Smith resided in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, a Detroit suburb, and sadly passed away on November 4, 1994, in Detroit. The apparent cause of his death was heart failure. Despite his untimely passing, Fred "Sonic" Smith's legacy continues to inspire and influence musicians to this day.
