He co-wrote and edited the award-winning documentary Weiner, which received the 2016 Sundance Grand Jury Prize, was a BAFTA nominee, and was shortlisted for the Academy Awards, boasting a 97% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despres also co-wrote and edited the critically acclaimed documentary Blackfish, a BAFTA nominee and Academy Award shortlistee, which has been viewed by over 21 million people in the US alone, prompting significant state and federal legislation.
In addition to his work on Weiner and Blackfish, Despres has contributed to a range of notable projects, including Red Army, which premiered at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and received a 97% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, They Call Us Monsters, an Emmy-winning investigative journalism series for PBS, Exposé, a PBS investigative journalism series, City Lax, a feature documentary for ESPN, At Risk, a short documentary for ACAP, and Wilderness Survival for Girls, a fiction feature film he also directed, which was released by ContentFilm/Image Entertainment.
The Hollywood Reporter praised Despres' work, stating that he "edits with propulsive narrative drive, shattering the boundaries of storytelling."
Throughout his career, Despres has received numerous accolades, including nominations for the American Cinema Editors' Documentary award in 2014 and 2017. He is an active member of the American Cinema Editors (ACE) and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
