Lucas Macfadden, professionally known as Cut Chemist, has been a prominent figure in the music industry for nearly three decades. This turntablist's journey began at the tender age of 11, when he first started experimenting with DJing. By the time he was 14, Cut had already started recording music with his friends, including Chali 2na of Jurassic 5, in a makeshift recording studio set up in his father's sun patio.
As he grew older, Cut's passion for music only intensified, and he went on to become a founding member of both the rap group Jurassic 5 and the Grammy Award-winning Latin funk outfit, Ozomatli. This involvement allowed him to develop a deep appreciation for music and rhythms from around the world, while still maintaining his roots in the hip-hop tradition.
Cut's mix-tapes and remixes quickly gained critical acclaim, and his 'Chemist' moniker was fully realized with the release of his instrumental album, Lesson 6: The Lecture. In the years that followed, Cut collaborated with DJ Shadow on a series of mix CDs, featuring only 45s. The result was a trilogy of critically acclaimed albums, including Brainfreeze, Product Placement, and The Hard Sell, with the latter debuting and headlining at the iconic Hollywood Bowl.
Cut's solo album journey began in 2006 with The Audience is Listening, released on Warner Bros. Following his major label stint, he decided to create his own boutique label, which allowed him greater creative freedom. Sound Of The Police, Funk Off Mega Mix, and his sophomore solo album, Die Cut, are some of the most notable releases under this new venture.
Despite the varying styles and genres explored in his music, there is one constant thread that ties all of Cut Chemist's work together: his unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging the listener's musical palate. Through his eclectic and innovative approach, Cut introduces listeners to obscure musical finds, cementing his reputation as a true pioneer in the world of music.
