Born around the same time, Thomas and Alfred narrowly escaped a nursery fire. Feeling he deserved Alfred's privileged upbringing, Thomas becomes convinced they were switched at birth. He believes his misfortunes - including the loss of his sister and unrequited love for Evelyne - should be Alfred's. As death approaches, Thomas plots revenge against the man who he sees as his bitter enemy and lifelong adversary.
