On a secluded farm, Katherine, a young maid, longs to escape her exhausting workload. Her older friend Hester, who runs the farm with her father Francis, offers a tempting alternative: less work in exchange for staying. When Francis passes away, Hester decides to sell the farm for a cash windfall, and they relocate to a small cottage. They plan to use the money to travel to Europe, but a tragic accident and the theft of their funds force them to alter their plans.
