World War II tugboats conduct salvage missions, picking up disabled ships under enemy fire, putting their crews' lives at risk. Captain David Ross, a former American military man, is assigned to lead a British tugboat, shown the ropes by old friend Captain Chris Ford. David becomes embroiled in the lives of Chris and his reclusive Italian-Swiss flatmate, Stella, who has a mysterious past.
