In 1946 London, novelist Maurice Bendrix reconnects with his old friend Henry Miles, a government minister, after a two-year absence. Their reunion is complicated by Maurice's lingering feelings for Henry's wife, Sarah, whom he had an affair with before she abruptly ended it. Henry is unaware of the affair and believes Sarah is currently having an affair with another man. Determined to uncover the truth, Maurice hires a detective agency to investigate Sarah's activities, hoping to understand what ended their relationship and whether she has remained faithful to him.
