Set in 1941 in a South Carolina fishing village, the film tells a dramatic story of interracial lovers caught in the turmoil of World War II. A wounded stranger, Mr. Ohta, appears in town under mysterious circumstances, and Sophie, a local, forms a bond with him through their shared love of art.
