Smilin' Through background

Smilin' Through

A young woman's plans to marry the son of a man responsible for the death of her aunt sparks outrage from her adoptive father, who struggles to come to terms with the decision.

John, a man who has been alone for 30 years since the death of Moonyean Clare, is forced to care for her niece Kathleen when her parents die at sea. As Kathleen grows up, she becomes the spitting image of Moonyean, and John's friend Willie begins to pursue her as a potential wife. However, Kathleen's life takes a dramatic turn when she meets Kenneth Wayne on a stormy night, despite John's disapproval due to his family's past role in Moonyean's death. When Ken goes off to war, John forbids any marriage, but Kathleen and Ken secretly make plans to wed. After four years, Ken returns from war, crippled, and decides to leave for America, but not before a dramatic confrontation with John.
