Maharaja Arunangshu, the ruler of Balabantpur, makes a wish list on his deathbed, dictating conditions for his son Himangshu's succession. Himangshu is forced to marry Alaka, an actress, and produce a legitimate heir within three years. However, a year and a half into the marriage, the palace librarian Harinath disappears, prompting Byomkesh and his friend Ajit to visit the palace under the guise of a hunting expedition. As they uncover secrets about the residents and topography of Balwantpur, Byomkesh becomes suspicious of Kaligati, the royal physician, and eventually reveals him as the culprit behind Harinath's disappearance.
