Hattie Burns, a middle-aged widow, takes a stand against corruption in her small town by running for mayor after local politicians fail to address the issue.

Middle-aged widow Hattie Burns seeks justice after a friend's daughter is killed in a gangland shootout at a local speakeasy. When her concerns are dismissed by the mayor, a corrupt politician running for re-election, Hattie decides to run against him, with her best friend Ivy as campaign manager. A strike by female voters ensues, and Hattie's candidacy gains momentum. However, she is unaware that her daughter's reformed hoodlum boyfriend is hiding in her attic, complicating her efforts.
