In 1938, Ailian, a 40-year-old wife, seeks relief from her husband's sexual demands by giving him a young concubine, Chiuming. Meanwhile, an American priest and doctor, Father Andre, becomes the tutor of her 18-year-old son, Fengmo Wu, at an orphanage. As classes begin, two forbidden loves emerge: between the priest and Ailian, and between Fengmo and Chiuming, amidst the backdrop of Japan's invasion of China.
