In 1973, American journalist Charles Horman arrives in Chile to reunite with his wife Beth, but is arrested during a US-backed military coup. His father, Ed Horman, a conservative businessman from New York, travels to Chile to find his missing son and is initially reassured by the American Consul's efforts. However, as Ed investigates further, his faith in his government's intentions begins to waver.
