MacGyver and his professor, Atticus, discover a mysterious coin in the ruins of Mycenae and barely escape a deadly trap. They believe the coin holds the key to solving the legend of Atlantis and embark on an expedition to the Balkans, where they find themselves in underground catacombs amidst a civil war. They recover the Ark of Solon, a relic believed to hold the Staff of Wisdom, but it's stolen by a renegade general and a treasure hunter. The trio must escape multiple traps and puzzles to reach the temple ruins on the volcanic island of Thera, where they find the charred body of the general and face off against the treasure hunter. In the end, they discover that the treasure was not gold or riches, but written knowledge that could control the minds of men.
