In 1928 Austria, Phillippe Halsman, a Jewish man, is arrested for allegedly murdering his father, Morduch, during a hiking trip. As his defense attorney, Richard Pressburger, takes on the case, he senses bias from Judge Larcher and faces a daunting decision: continue defending Phillippe or risk contempt charges and imprisonment.
