In 1830s Paris, novelist George Sand is making waves with her unconventional views and attire, causing a stir in the literary scene. She's just ended a tumultuous affair and is seeking a weekend getaway from her pursuer at the country estate of the Duke and Duchess D'Antan. George is drawn to the gathering to meet the visiting Polish composer Frédéric Chopin, with whom she's fallen in love through his music. However, her conquest of Chopin is complicated by the presence of her former lover Mallefille, writer Alfred De Musset, and her own children, who reflect her relaxed views of the world.
