A fearless man's life begins with a tumultuous childhood marked by fistfights. Amidst the chaos of the 1960s, Tae-woong seeks revenge against a bully and gets stabbed. He befriends Seung-moon's family, including his sister Hae-ok, who finds his reckless behavior attractive. Tae-woong becomes a bouncer at a nightclub and starts a romance with Hae-ok, who becomes a teacher. As the war between rival gangs escalates, the Myungdong Gang collapses, and Tae-woong turns to collecting debts from former politicians. After a series of defeats, Hae-ok's father becomes a politician. The couple marries and starts a family, but their happiness is short-lived as they witness the Coup d'Etat of May 1961, drawing Tae-woong into the whirlpool of modern history.
