Upper-class brothers Julien and François return to their Catholic boarding school in the countryside after summer break in 1944. Julien, a leader and good student, initially clashes with new student Jean Bonnet, but eventually forms a close bond with him. Julien learns that Jean is Jewish and the priests are hiding him from the Nazis, and he keeps the secret. However, tensions rise when the priest discovers that the servant Joseph is stealing supplies, leading to his dismissal. The Gestapo soon arrives to investigate the school, putting everyone in danger.
