In this poignant film, a struggling laundrywoman grapples with the crushing weight of societal pressures.

Gervaise Macquart, a young laundress with a disability, is abandoned by her lover Auguste Lantier with two sons. She perseveres and eventually marries Coupeau, a roofer. After years of hard work, she achieves her dream of owning her own laundry. However, Coupeau's drinking problem worsens after a workplace accident, and Lantier's reappearance sets off a chain of events that leads to the tragic downfall of a working-class family.
