David Frank, a former corporate attorney, is devastated by the death of his wife and spends his days in a bathrobe with his dog Brutus as his only companion. After a tornado destroys his house and kills Brutus, the insurance company refuses to pay, citing the "Act of God" clause. Enraged, David decides to sue God and His representatives, sparking a series of depositions and a trial that becomes a soulful journey.
