Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher, a Los Angeles journalist, is driven by his profession. Disguised as a homeless person, he's researching drugs and their dealings at the beach. When wealthy Alan Stanwyk approaches him, Fletch is offered $50,000 to kill Stanwyk, whose wife will then receive the insurance money. But Stanwyk's unaware of Fletch's true identity as a journalist. Returning to his normal life, Fletch uncovers Stanwyk's health and connections between drug dealing, Stanwyk's private jet, the police, and a valuable Utah land.
