A mother leaves her 11-year-old daughter, Tomo, at her brother Makio's place for the umpteenth time. Tomo is used to this routine and finds comfort with Makio and his transgender partner, Rinko, who works as a caregiver at the nursing home where Makio's mother, Sayuri, lives with dementia. As Tomo spends more time with Rinko, he begins to see her as a maternal figure and forms a close bond with her. Rinko teaches Tomo to knit, a skill she learned from her own mother when she struggled with her sexuality as a teenager. The story follows the unconventional family as they navigate their relationships and find a sense of belonging.
