Dr. Matthew Clark, a demanding psychologist, runs the Crawthorne State Training Institute, a pioneering boarding school for developmentally-challenged children. He hires Jean Hansen, a former concert pianist with no experience in teaching or working with the disabled, as the school's music teacher.
