William Thornhill, a Thames bargeman, is transported to New South Wales in 1806 for stealing timber. He's pardoned and settles on the Hawkesbury River, claiming prime riverfront land that's been home to the Darug people for 40,000 years. The Darug refuse to give up their land without a fight, and Thornhill faces an impossible choice: side with settlers who view the Darug as savages, or find a way to coexist with them.
