Ethan Hawke was asked to make a documentary on Hollywood power couple Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. During his research, he discovers that Newman had previously asked screenwriter Stewart Stern to conduct series of interviews for writing a memoir. Stern transcribed those recordings but Newman later destroyed them. Instead, Hawke restructured the project to have actor friends read the transcriptions, adding archive footage related to Newman and Woodward, interspersed with his own interviews with them.
