Guy Crouchback, heir to an English Roman Catholic family on decline, arrives back in England during World War II. He joins the Royal Corps of Halberdiers alongside eccentrics but fails his attempts to reconcile with Virginia, whose divorce he has from. After implicating a colleague's death, Guy is sent to train a commando brigade on a Scottish island and later heads to Crete during its evacuation. During this time, he escapes to Egypt along with Ludovic and Ivor Claire. He returns to England via Mrs. Stitch's assistance in potentially preventing Claude Claire from being declared a deserter. After getting involved in charitable organizations, Guy marries Virginia for the second time; however, she gives birth to a child by her ex-lover Trimmer while he is away. During his journey through Yugoslavia with partisans, Virginia and Guy's uncle Peregrine are killed by doodlebug bombs. Guy returns home after participating in charity work.
