Ian Struan Dunross, chairman of Struan & Company, is the supreme leader of the British-East Asia trading company, known as the "Noble House" to the Chinese. He inherits ancient promises, dark secrets, and financial problems on a small island where people seek to overthrow the Noble House. His archenemy, Quillan Gornt, a lesser tai-pan, plots to ruin the Noble House.
