While serving time, Dick Hickock learns about $10,000 hidden by a prosperous rancher. Paroled, he convinces Perry Smith to join him in looking for the money. On November 24, 1959, Dick and Perry break into the Holcomb, Kansas house of Herb Clutter, where they wake the family and brutally kill them all. The bodies are discovered by two churchgoers before Sunday mass. Detective Alvin Dewey leads the investigation but finds no clues, suspects, or motives.
