In 1920s Berlin, Anna Anderson (Amy Irving), a suicidal asylum patient claiming to be Anastasia Romanov, the supposed daughter of Tsar Nicholas II and last Czar of Russia, who was dethroned and murdered by Communists along with his family during the Russian Revolution, gains followers despite skepticism from surviving Romanov members living in exile.
