In 1870s Estonia, a young couple, Andres and Krõõt, attempt to build a new life on a farm bought with a loan. Despite the desolate and neglected land, they strive to turn it into a thriving homestead. However, their efforts are met with resistance from the barren land, a stubborn neighbor, and the birth of daughters instead of the son they hoped for. As Andres' desperation grows, he becomes obsessed with finding the truth and justice, sacrificing everything he holds dear in the process.
