In the early 1970s, filmmaker Barbet Schroeder ventures into the Mapuga rain forest tribe in upland New Guinea, capturing the tribe's pursuit of paradise and their unique approaches to sexual freedom and mind alteration.

A French consul's wife, Viviane, ventures to New Guinea to collect exotic feathers for Parisian export. She joins four European travelers on a perilous journey to the enigmatic Valley, hidden in the Guinean mountains. As they venture deeper, Viviane becomes embroiled in their quest, navigating the clash of Western and indigenous values, and ultimately setting her sights on the mystical Valley of the Gods.
