After World War I, Larry Darrell returns to America a changed man, leaving his fiancée Isabel to wait for him. He travels to Paris, where he discovers a new sense of purpose and begins to read. One book leads him to India and Nepal, where he finds spiritual guidance from a lama. When he returns to Paris, he reunites with Isabel and old friends, only to find that everyone has moved on with their lives.
