In the early 1950s, Martha Beck, a bitter and overweight head nurse, joins a lonely hearts club after being signed up by her best friend. She meets Ray Fernandez, a charming Spanish immigrant, and they fall in love. However, Ray reveals his true nature as a con man who scams lonely women, and Martha decides to join him on his cons, pretending to be his sister. As they travel together, their differences in style cause problems, and Martha's jealousy threatens to be their downfall.
