A retired lawyer is drawn to a holy man and his assistant after meeting them on his way back from a pilgrimage. The holy man claims to have personal connections with Buddha and Hindu gods, and the lawyer is convinced by his extraordinary claims. The holy man begins to give lectures to a wealthy audience at the lawyer's residence, and the lawyer decides to introduce his entire family to the guru, including his unmarried daughter who is being courted. However, the lawyer's rationalist friends become suspicious of the holy man's true intentions and plan to expose him as a charlatan.
