A lone gunman, Gil McCord, is hired to bring Ellen Beldon back to Texas to face execution for her husband's murder. But as they journey back, Ellen reveals the truth: her brother-in-law, Kell, killed her husband to inherit their father's fortune, and a drunken fur-trapper, Elby Kirby, was the only witness. Determined to uncover the truth, Gil tracks down Kirby to extract a confession, only to have Kell intercept Ellen and hand her over to the authorities. As Gil fights to clear Ellen's name, Kell tries to eliminate him to silence the truth once and for all.
