In the late 1920s, Eddy Duchin, a charismatic and talented pianist, moves to New York to pursue his dreams of playing with the Leo Reisman orchestra. After a chance meeting with socialite Marjorie Oelrichs, he gets his big break and becomes a successful showman. Tragedy strikes when Marjorie dies after giving birth to their son Peter, and Eddy struggles to come to terms with his loss. He eventually reunites with Peter, but their relationship is complicated by Eddy's guilt and his later diagnosis with a terminal illness. In a poignant twist, Eddy proposes to his friend Chiquita, and they get married as he faces the end of his life.
