A former circus clown, Helmut Doork, is arrested and sent to a prison camp after making fun of Hitler in a bar. Despite being pressured by his fellow prisoners, Helmut refuses to perform for them, wanting to maintain his dignity. Eventually, he is forced to entertain, but his act fails miserably. However, he finds a new audience among a group of Jewish children in the camp, and he begins to perform for them regularly. When the camp's Commandant orders him to stop, Helmut refuses, leading to his punishment and imprisonment.
