The Blue Kite

A family's life in Beijing unfolds over two decades, revealing the profound effects of the Hundred Flowers Campaign, Great Leap Forward, and Cultural Revolution on their daily lives.

In 1953, Chen Shujuan and Lin Shaolong marry in Beijing, and a year later, their son Tietou is born. As the Party's influence grows, the family's life is marked by constant surveillance and visits from the neighborhood committee. Tragedy strikes when Shaolong dies in a reform camp, and their close friend, who had protected them, succumbs to malnutrition. The family faces further hardship as they confront the Red Guard, leading to injury, imprisonment, and ultimately, death. Despite the turmoil, Shujuan's love for Tietou remains strong, and the child's blue kite symbolizes hope, as he promises to make another for a young friend.
