The Barretts of Wimpole Street background

The Barretts of Wimpole Street

A young woman, Elizabeth Barrett, defies her overbearing father's strict rules by falling deeply in love with the charming poet, Robert Browning.

In 1845, the Barrett family, consisting of a widowed father and his nine adult children, live on Wimpole Street in London. The family is controlled by the tyrannical patriarch, who forbids his children from disobeying him, threatening to disown them if they defy him. This strict rule affects the family, particularly the youngest daughter Henrietta, who is secretly in love with Captain Surtees Cook. However, the most affected is the oldest daughter, Elizabeth, a published poet who has been confined to her bedroom for five years due to her physical infirmity.
