A working-class Chicago family's three children take distinct paths: one joins the Marines and fights in Vietnam, another becomes involved in the civil rights movement, and the third gets pregnant and joins a San Francisco hippie commune. Meanwhile, an African-American family's son becomes a minister and civil rights organizer, eventually joining the Black Panthers as a bodyguard for Fred Hampton.
