In the 1890s, a young porter named Bob Gregson works at a rural railway station and dreams of impressing the stationmaster to become his successor. He falls in love with a teacher, Harriet Collins, and wants to save the local orphanage where she works, which is threatened by a local businessman's property deal. Bob discovers a talented Jack Russell terrier, "Station Jim," in a crate and uses its tricks to attract passengers. When Queen Victoria visits the station, Bob hopes to persuade her to support the orphanage, but unknown anti-royalist terrorists plan to assassinate her. Station Jim recognizes the assassin, foils the attempt, and saves the day.
