In 1873, Indian Territory, a man named Talbot Roe is consumed by grief over the loss of his Indian wife, Awbonnie. His father, Prescott Roe, tries to save him by buying Awbonnie's sister, Velada, from a traveling carnival. However, the plan is foiled when Velada's stepbrother, Reeves, protests the sale. Prescott kidnaps Velada and promises her a way to get rid of her father in exchange for comforting Talbot.

A grief-stricken widower, Talbot, awaits his own death under a tree, his Kiowa wife's body by his side. However, her spirit begins to torment him when he refuses to cremate her, and his father sends her sister to try and reason with him.
