An American gun-runner, Caine, arrives in a Sudanese coastal town, badly injured and out of luck. He befriends a local physician, Doc, and a young street urchin, Runt, and catches the eye of Inspector Barok, who suspects him of trouble. In need of money, Caine joins a research ship crew, led by Professor Dan Mallare and his daughter Anna, despite rumors of the ship being cursed after a diver's fatal shark attack.
