John, a former Las Vegas resident, now works as a claims adjuster in Albuquerque. He's a gambler who moved away from Vegas to escape his addiction, but still buys scratch-off tickets. He's attracted to his coworker Jill, but she's secretly having an affair with their boss, Mr. Townsend. John gets a new job as a fraud investigator with Virgil, and their first case involves investigating an automobile accident claim made by a stripper. As they travel the US southwest to gather evidence, John tries to start a relationship with Jill over the phone, while also struggling with the temptation to return to Las Vegas.
