The Red Army finally captures the village of Ovsyannikovo after intense battles, but at a devastating cost, with only a third of the original company remaining. Weary and exhausted, the soldiers await reinforcements, but instead receive an order to hold the village at all costs, a near-suicidal mission. The company commander must make a desperate choice: risk losing his remaining men by following orders, or disobey and risk court-martial by withdrawing his troops from the mortar fire.
