In the small village of Nelakondapalli, a young and talented singer named Mallamma is taken care of by an elderly man. When they visit Dorasani's house to seek permission for Mallamma's education, Dorasani becomes enraged upon hearing Mallamma's song and bans it, threatening her with death. After her house is burnt and the elderly man is killed, Mallamma is saved by a music master and sets out on a journey to Delhi to seek help from Jawaharlal Nehru.
