Idealistic teacher Sandra Beecher starts a new job at a Hawaiian high school, where she faces unmotivated students and low expectations. To spark their interest, she directs a few students to create their own science fair projects. One student, Daniel, announces a plan to build a solar-powered car and enter it in the Inter-island Race. With sponsorship from CelTech, the winner will compete in the Trans-Australian World Solar Challenge. Despite the odds, Sandra agrees to support the project, convincing a reluctant shop teacher to join her. The team faces numerous obstacles, including self-doubt, internal conflicts, and skepticism from their competitors, including CelTech and the current world champion.
