Emmy Rossum's character, Nola, escapes her abusive stepfather and flees to New York City to find her biological father, a singer/songwriter herself. After a night in Central Park, she lands a job at an East Village diner run by Margaret, who recognizes Nola's outsider status. Nola finds a new family among the diner's eclectic staff, including a cook, a tabloid columnist, and a transvestite, and discovers the city's welcoming nature.
