Two veteran cowhands, Monte Walsh and Chet Rollins, spend their days working on ranches, taking breaks to enjoy the freedom of the open range and occasional trips into town. Their relationships are simple: Monte has a long-standing connection with a prostitute, while Chet is smitten with the widow who runs the local hardware store. The friends' days are filled with camaraderie and competition with fellow cowboys, until a troubled hand, Shorty Austin, gets fired and turns to rustling and violence. This sets off a chain of events that irreversibly changes the lives of Monte and Chet on the range.
